Crazy Little Thing Called Queen
SUNDAY JUNE 5th, 2022
The Club organised an afternoon of live music as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Picnic and Musical Celebration, held in the grounds of Horsley Towers on Sunday June 5th, an event brilliantly organised by East and West Horsley Parish Councils. An estimated 3,000 people enjoyed four great live bands on an afternoon which defied the thundery predictions of the weatherman.
Unfinished Business opened proceedings, with their usual relaxed acoustic vibe and an eclectic selection of songs, culminating in a packed stage of local musicians singing Times Like These, a new anthem for our times. Next up were local legends, the Surrey Pumas, who moved things up a gear with a tight, rocking set of top ten hits from the finest musical years of Her Majesty’s reign, including songs by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Who. The Funkin’ Skunks selected their set from the 70s and 80s, including songs by Blondie, Ian Dury, Jam and Madness. They soon had the audience up and dancing, with some unlikely local residents throwing some even more unlikely shapes. The headline act Crazy Little Thing Called Queen began their act by playing the National Anthem from the parapets of Horsley Towers, and soon had the crowd rocking to near-perfect renditions of Queen classics for the next two hours. Lead singer Yvan Silva conjured up the spirit of Freddie Mercury and for the finale was joined by opera singer Sally Franklyn for a rendition of Queen’s hit, Barcelona. The audience more than played its part throughout, singing, dancing and waving random arms aloft. |
