LIVE AND ACOUSTIC
AT THE MALTING HOUSE THURSDAY 26th JANUARY 2023 For our first event of the year, we showcased some fantastic local talent, in a club fundraiser held in the rather groovy setting of the Malting House. With five great acts for just a fiver, this sold out quickly - and a packed house received each act well, with a fair bit of singing and clapping along. Said one member: "Very entertaining with great singing, musicality and humour." The Malting House looked great with its 'nightclub' lighting and set-up, and one day we'll have enough chairs for everyone. Many thanks to Steve Harvey for running the Bar and to Paul Waterer for providing and running the PA. Live Music ran from 7.45 to 10.30, with only brief gaps between each act. In order of appearance, the acts were: C,S&M (Clare Maguire, Steve McGurk and Mark Beasley) played a short melodic set that highlighted Clare's singing and Steve's guitar playing - from the 50s torch song 'Cry me a River' to the more recent 'Mr Rock and Roll'. by Amy MacDonald. MPG brought together the talents of Malcolm Brickell (vocals, guitar), George Stein (keyboards) and Peter Warburton (guitar). Their set had a strong 'rat pack' bias but also and appropriately included Wide Eyed and Legless. The audience joined in all the songs, as they did for Utterly Unique - Sandra and Alan - who were celebrating their 100th gig together. Sandra's strong, confident vocals and Al's tasteful guitar gave us some selections from their extensive set list - classic pop, like Annie's song, through to show tunes, old and new. Next up was the one-man wrecking ball of guitar and vocal energy that is Dr Phil. Refusing to be defined as a busker, Phil nevertheless set out his guitar case as though for donations and powered his way through songs by the likes of Crowded House, Oasis and REM. The closing act, the All-Time Lowes paid tribute to master songwriter and all-round pop genius, Nick Lowe. Mark Beasley and Peter Earle played guitars and sang, with the help of guitar maestro, Niall Squire, on the later songs. From more obscure laments like Stoplight Roses and Lately I've Let Things Slide, to better-known songs like Cruel to be Kind and Peace, Love and Understanding, this was an absolute triumph (guess who's writing this). The closing song, Up the Junction, was an advertisement for the upcoming Chris Difford gig (as he wrote the song). The overall verdict - a great success, definitely to be repeated, and possibly on a larger scale. Thanks to Simon Hillard (b/w), Paul Waterer and Alan Barrett for the photos. |
