The original Traveling Wilburys never played a show together, as Roy Orbison sadly died just after their debut album was released in 1988. The passing of George Harrison in 2001 and Tom Petty in 2017 meant that only Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne are left from the original line-up, so for the past few years the Trembling Wilburys have been giving audiences "the show that never was" to enormous acclaim.
Their superb two- set show features a great mix of solo hits by all five original Wilburys, such as 'Here Comes the Sun', "Pretty Woman", "My Back Pages", 'Taxman', "I Won't Back Down", "If Not For You", "You Got It", 'Hold On Tight' and 'Roll Over Beethoven', as well as Traveling Wilburys' classics such as 'End of The Line', 'Handle With Care' and 'She's My Baby'. BAND MEMBERS Michael Goulding as George Harrison Dave Collison as Roy Orbison Andy McNish as Bob Dylan & Tom Petty Marko Laver as Jeff Lynne Dzal Martin – Lead guitar Steve Salvari – Keyboards Dave Stark - Drums TICKETS £26.00 (INCL. THE TREMBLING WILBURYS AT HORSLEY TOWERS, SUNDAY 4th JUNE 2023 A Review by Mike Allen, Fleet Street Journalist and club member THE NIGHT THAT HORSLEY TREMBLED It was another triumph for the Horsley Live Music Club, as Horsley Towers shook to the sound of some of rock's greatest music with a memorable performance by the Trembling Wilburys tribute band. A sell out audience in the Great Hall were treated to a set list of nearly 30 songs. All were written or originally performed by members of 1980s Supergroup the Traveling Wilburys - Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Drinks on the terrace in the evening sunshine was the perfect (and peaceful) start for a night of belting tunes played by the Trembling Wilburys, the seven piece band that uses the name originally conceived by Harrison when he was forming the group, before being persuaded to change it. They kicked off with a couple of Traveling Wilburys originals ‘She’s my Baby’ and ‘Dirty World’ before cracking through a series of group and individual hits, such as ‘Here Comes The Sun’, ‘l Won’t Back Down’ and ‘You Got It’. The original supergroup never performed live together, as Orbison died shortly before they were due to play on tour. But that didn’t stop an absolutely superb - and chillingly authentic - performance by Dave Collison, who sung ‘Claudette’, ‘In Dreams’, ‘Pretty Woman’, and ‘You Got It’, giving a taster of the concert that never was. With Andy McNish playing the parts of Tom Petty and Bob Dylan and Michael Goulding outstanding as George Harrison they fully earned their standing ovation. Lead guitarist Dzal Martin made a stylish contribution throughout - hardly surprising for someone whose CV reads like a who's who of the recording and touring world - from Beck and Clapton to Terry Reid, and much more. A word too for Dave Stark on drums - a music industry legend and author, who turns out to be a top-quality drummer as well, driving the band with swing and panache. Rebecca Turner was deputising on keyboards for the evening - but you would never have known, as she seemed to know every song inside out and her inventive playing was of the very highest standard and always avoided the obvious. The band's encore sign-off to send everyone home buzzing was a brilliant footstamping rendition of Roll Over Beethoven with Marko Laver, superb throughout, as Jeff Lynne. |
