Roy Orbison - often known as 'The Big O' - is without doubt one of the all-time greats: a singer with a powerful, distinctive voice, who wrote songs with complex structures and emotional lyrics. Born in Texas in 1936, Orbison started his career as a teenager, before signing for the legendary Sun Records in 1956, as a potential 'replacement' for Elvis. Unlike Elvis, Orbison often conveyed vulnerability rather than machismo, and performed with minimal motion and in black clothes, to match his black hair and dark sunglasses. From 1960 to 1966, 22 of Orbison's singles reached the Billboard Top 40, including Only the Lonely, Running Scared, Crying, In Dreams and Oh Pretty Woman. Orbison suffered a number of personal tragedies and as his career in the US went into decline, he became increasingly popular in the UK, where he continued to tour regularly, headlining the first Beatles concert Tour. Roy enjoyed a resurgence in the 1980s, when he co-founded the 'Super Group' the Traveling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne. His final solo record, You Got It, was his most successful in the US and UK for 25 years. Sadly, it was released a month after his death from a heart attack in December 1988, aged 52. |
