IAN McNABB
"I started playing in bands in 1975 when I was 14. There was no big plan, just a love of music. None of us ever thought about the future - we only thought as far as the next gig. It's pretty amazing to be still here and doing it." Ian McNabb rose to fame in the ’80s as the principal songwriter and frontman for hit band The Icicle Works, formed in 1981. Known for sharp indie-rock songs like Understanding Jane and Hollow Horse, The Icicle Works scored a top 20 hit with Love Is A Wonderful Colour in the U.K, duly appearing on Top of the Pops, and also achieved top 40 placings in the U.S, Canada, and Europe with Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream). The Icicle Works achieved top 40 placings in the UK for all four of their albums until they split up in 1988. Ian’s work as a solo artist has developed consistently from the time of his band’s breakup in the late ’80s until the present day, with outstanding albums like Merseybeast, New Brighton Rock, and his latest – the critically-acclaimed 65. We urge you to seek his work out, if you are not aware of it. His first solo album, Truth and Beauty (1992) was financed by remortgaging his house. It was followed by his Mercury Prize-nominated album Head Like a Rock (recorded with members of Neil Young's Crazy Horse). His work ranges from lyrical introspective ballads to robust guitar-driven anthems, all with great melodies and soaring choruses. After 38 albums, an autobiography, and numerous side-projects – including work with artists such as Ian Broudie (Lightning Seeds), Mike Scott (Waterboys), Peter Buck (REM), Danny Thompson and Ringo Starr - his work continues to earn widespread critical acclaim. To find out more about Ian, we suggest visiting his website www.ianmcnabb.com His entertaining and honest autobiography – Merseybeast – is also well worth a read. I've read it twice!
